Stormwater Management

Stormwater Masterplan
Should a known release of a hazardous or otherwise detrimental material into our stormwater system occur, the Village has compiled a Stormwater Map which can be used to determine potential "release" locations for these flows as well as sites where these flows can be intercepted. In order to achieve the desired amount of detail, the Village was split into “Drainage Zones” which can be seen on the first page of the document. In the event of an undesirable release of materials in one of these zones, the corresponding map can be used to get an idea of where the material will flow. The zones are divided based upon the locations they drain to, with each number draining to a different area or body of water. Areas with more than one outlet (yellow triangle) are divided into subzones to show the exact outlet point. Zones and sub-zones are labeled in bold black text, with their respective outlet points labeled in red. In areas without storm water infrastructure, thin green contour lines and blue arrows show approximate water flow.

Where does rain water go?
Did you know that storm waters flow from your yards and street to the streams and rivers of our environment? Unlike the wastewater from our homes and businesses, storm water is not treated. Anything that is spilled or dumped into the open inlets in your neighborhood goes directly into the environment.

What should I be looking for?

  • Flowing water in storm water ditches or pipes during periods of no rainfall.
  • Pipes or hoses draining to the stormwater system without an obvious source.
  • Stockpiles of solid wastes such as yard waste or trimmings.
  • Buckets or drums containing unknown or hazardous substances or lead acid batteries on bare ground.

What do I do next?
If there is evidence of an illegal discharge or you witness someone dumping write down a description of what you observed with dates and times. Then please contact the Village during business hours. After hours reports should be made to METCAD at (217) 333-8911.

What can I do?

  • Properly dispose of used motor oil, paint, and lawn and garden chemicals.
  • Wash your vehicle at a commercial car wash where the soapy water will go into the sanitary sewer system to be treated.
  • Bag your grass clippings instead of blowing them out into the street where they accumulate in the storm sewer inlets. This will help eliminate mosquitoes in your neighborhood.
  • Also, you can be on the look out for signs of illicit discharges.
