Board of Fire and Police Commissioners (BFPC)

Generally, the BFPC is empowered by State law to test, examine, hire, promote, discipline, and terminate full-time employees of a municipality’s fire department and police department. However, the Village does not operate full-time departments of this nature and the referenced law does not currently apply. Therefore, until such time as the provisions of 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-1, as amended, apply to the Village, the BFPC shall not have that authority or possess those powers. Instead, the Board of Trustees decided to utilize the BFPC to research best practices; begin developing rules; and serve as a public sounding board for policy topic remanded to them by the Village President or the Board of Trustees. After the initial appointments made in 2023, each member will serve a 3-year term.
